Getting to the Island of Capri
The extremely famous island off the end of the Amalfi Coast is visitable in a single day. However, if you have the opportunity, take two days to see it all thoroughly. The most important thing to remember is that the prices on Capri are much higher than on the mainland, especially as far as excursions and hotels are concerned. Getting to the island is hardly cheap, either. It is, therefore, better to choose a budget hotel on the island of Capri, or if you truly want to cherish your memories of this holiday, book a romantic hotel.
The ferry arrives at the Gulf of the Marina Grande; on the island there are two towns: Capri and Anacapri, divided by a mountain that you can go up via chair lift (all details indicated on the map). The main attractions are noted on the ‘Things to see in Capri’ page.
Getting to Capri
Capri can only be reached by boat from Positano, Amalfi and Sorrento. We recommend the latter option as there are many more ferries in Sorrento, the prices are lower and it is much closer. What’s more, the hotels at Sorrento cost less. On the island, it is forbidden to use your own car, however there are plenty of taxis.
Departure | First sailing to the island | Last sailing from the island | Price | Journey time | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Sorrento | 7.30am | 6.45pm | 15-19 euros | 20-30 minutes | Every 10-20 minutes. |
Positano | 8.50am | 7.00pm | 20 euros | 50 minutes | Every half an hour. |
Amalfi | 8.30am | 5.30pm | 22 euros | 70 minutes | Every half an hour until 11:30am. Last sailing to the island at 3:00pm. |
Don’t buy advance tickets online! Plans sometimes go awry. If it happens to be raining on the day you have planned to visit the Island of Capri, then it makes no sense to go and visit it. If the sea is choppy and the ferry services to/from the island become interrupted, then you might wind up wasting the money you paid for the ticket.
You can buy tickets on this site.

Car parks at the Port of Sorrento
Thanks to a large number of parking spaces at the Port of Sorrento, visiting Capri has become even simpler. The main car parks are noted on the map; using a sat-nav you can use the address: "Via Luigi de Maio, 58. Sorrento". Parking costs vary from 15 to 25 euros per day, depending on the season.
